Thermo-kinetic explosions: Safety first or safety last?

چکیده
Gas and vapour explosions have been involved in industrial accidents since the beginnings of industry. A century ago, at 11:55 am on Friday 24th September 1920, petroleum barge Warwick exploded London's docklands seven men were killed. Understanding what happened when it blew up as was being refurbished, how to prevent similar explosions, involves fluid mechanics thermodynamics plus chemistry. I recount 1920 accident an example, together with history thermo-kinetic prior present day, review actual state science explosion roles mechanics, thermodynamics, chemistry that science. The has aware its societal implications from beginning, but, despite advances health safety over past century, is there still work do?

Safety First and Ambiguity
There is considerable empirical evidence suggesting that ambiguity (i.e., parameter risk) impacts pricing decisions by actuaries and underwriters and their desire to provide coverage. Stone proposed a safety first model of choice that provides a possible explanation for this behavior. This paper analyzes Stone's proposed stability and survival constraints and compares the results with those pre...
متن کاملSafety I to Safety II: A Paradigm Shift or More Work as Imagined?; Comment on “False Dawns and New Horizons in Patient Safety Research and Practice”
In their editorial, Mannion and Braithwaite contend that the approach to solving the problem of unsafe care, Safety I, is flawed and requires a shift in thinking to what they are calling Safety II. We have reservations as to whether by itself the shift from Safety I to Safety II is sufficient. Perhaps our failure to improve outcomes in the field of patient safety and quality lies less in our ap...

متن کاملSafety First Portfolio Insurance Will
In this study, we show how a dynamic insurance program can be implemented within a mean-variance framework. The approach combines elements of the single period safety first idea suggested by Telser and developed by Leibowitz with multiperiod insurance strategies like CPPI and TIPP. The insurance program allows the user to set a probability of hitting a specified floor or target and also allows ...
